Lewis Carroll’s Boyhood Walk

This circular walk of approximately 6 miles will take you from Daresbury church to the site of Daresbury Parsonage through fields and lanes that the young Lewis Carroll would have known, around the year 1840. His father, the Reverend Charles Dodgson, was the vicar of All Saints, Daresbury from 1827 – 1843. His third child and eldest son, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born at the Parsonage and baptised at Daresbury church in 1832. He is known all over the world by his pen-name, Lewis Carroll.

The entrance to fields is mostly through kissing gates, not stiles, although there is the odd raised embankment.

Please follow the Country Code, keeping to the footpath over fields, leaving field gates as you find them, and taking litter home with you. Keep your dog under control, especially near livestock, and clean up after it!

When the route follows a lane, please take great care where there is no pavement or grass verge. Walk on the right, facing oncoming traffic, in single file if necessary, and cross to the left when approaching a sharp right hand bend, then cross back to the right after the bend. LOOK AND LISTEN.

Follow the current COVID-19 guidelines. Remember to keep a social distance from other people you may meet, and be especially aware when walking through farmyards.
